I said before that my four year old going to school was bittersweet. Well, today wasn’t so sweet. I usually get the older two kids off the school and I get about a 15 minute window to drink my coffee, check emails, and say hi to you wonderful people. Today, within minutes, my 4 year old decided to pop his head out the door. Well I figured, that’s cool with me. We can get ready a few minutes early, maybe stop and get a donut, and get to school a little early. This is not what he had in mind.
For the first time since starting school (which he was so excited about) he put up a heck of a fight. He was tossing clothes off just as quickly as I could put them on him. He just kept yelling that he didn’t want to go to school. Now, with this kid, you never really know what the issue is. Is he too tired? Is he just missing the family? He claims the kids were being mean to him. He openly admitted that he may have been mean first so what does he expect?
I know he hates to follow rules and doesn’t do well with authority. Thats where the ODD kicks in, but he has told me every single day about how much he loves school. I sure couldn’t tell by the way he was acting this morning. He was swinging for the fences everytime I tried to pick him up to get him ready. He was actually hiding under the table for like 15 minutes. He is a quick little bugger and I am not really agile anymore so he may have bested me there.
Have you ever seen the movie “The Bad News Bears: In Breaking Training”? Its from the 70′s I believe. Well there was a scene where this kid “Tanner” screams out that the game is not over and he proceeds to run away, dodging every attempt, from Umpires and staff. He was making the staff look like a bunch of morons. Well thats what Chase was doing to me this morning. I felt like such a jackass trying to wrestle this kid to the ground just to get him to go to school. It took me so long that he was gonna be late and at his pre-k class, if you are late then they don’t let you come. That means that today, he won the battle. I will not let him win the war. Next time I will get his butt dressed in the car if I have to!
