Just so everyone knows, sleeplessdad.com is not just a gimmick. I really am a sleepless dad. I am really lucky if I get a couple of hours a night and then I have a full day of get kids off to school, driving the 4 year old to pre-k, and then taking care of the 3 and 1 year old. If at any point in the day I try to nap, I am usually jolted out of a possible sleep cycle by a child asking for drinks or snacks. When its not that its diaper changes and divvying out toys.
I have gone like this for years from time to time it will always catch up with me. If I am extremely lucky it happens on a weekend where I can get a little help from either the older children or my parents. It is a Wednesday and today had to be the day it caught up with me. I know it is because, on top of my lack of sleep, almost every one of the people in my house is sick. I have tried to fight it as much as possible. I have disinfected and increased vitamin C. I have avoided the coughing and washed my hands constantly. I guess some things you can’t avoid forever.
Today I was able to force myself out of bed just long enough to wake up the older kids to get ready for school. I was planning on giving my 4 year old (Chase) one more day to get over being sick so I didn’t bother to wake him up. With it being so early I decided to lay back down until it the little ones got up. My 11 yer old (typically the responsible one) got herself off to school without any issues. However, my 13 year old woke me up at 7:30 to tell me he missed the bus. I had every intention on getting up and taking him to school, I really did. It just didn’t work out that way.
I was too scared I would fall asleep at the wheel. That’s how tired and sick I was beginning to feel. My son had no problem staying home from school so I asked him to help me out today. For those of you that have heard my rants about my 13 year old this may come as a shock, but he was amazing today. He helped out so much. He changed diapers and fed babies. He took care of the kids better than I ever imagined. He let me rest and when I got up he was as sweet as he could be. I was more proud of him than I can remember being in a long time. I know he reads my blog so I do want to thank him. So for the record, thank you for all your help Christian. You went above and beyond today and when it finally caught up to me, you were the biggest help in the world!
